Downtown Planning Study
Earlier in 2012, the City of Van Wert received a Tier 1 Planning Grant from the Ohio Department of Development. We are currently in the thick of the planning phase, working closely with business owners, residents, and a planning consultant to gather feedback and input for each chapter of the Downtown Plan.
The 1st Public Workshop, held in November, focused on the pillar of "Design." As part of this workshop, participants could offer their suggestions on what they think looks and works well in Downtown, and areas that are in need of improvements. This discussion included not only buildings, but the amount of greenery and plants in Downtown, parking areas, and how easily you can walk from place to place. A landscape architect was able to quickly demonstrate in real time how changes, big and small, could transform different spaces.

The 2nd Public Workshop, held in December, summarized these discussions and introduced "Economic Restructuring." Also called Business Enhancement, the presentation included highlights from multiple studies of Downtown Van Wert and NW Ohio, including the impact of tourism and arts industries. Using presentation software, the consultant was able to get immediate responses from all participants on a range of questions pertaining to Downtown stores, shopping availability, and future opportunities.
The 3rd Public Workshop will be in early spring, highlighting "Promotions." This will discuss how the Downtown is marketed as a district for business, shopping, dining, and entertainment. This will be a wonderful opportunity for merchants to gather with residents and brainstorm how we can work better to attract more people downtown for large and small events throughout the calendar year.
A consumer survey has been created to collect responses from those to work, shop, and live in Van Wert. These responses are anonymous, but the combined data will be used as part of the resulting Downtown Plan document.
